Brixton to Berlin: the creative’s move, sorted
Berlin is the classic Brixton exit — the city that still has room for the creative, the broke and the brilliant. If it’s calling you, here’s the honest lowdown on making the move.
Find your neighbourhood
Neukölln and Kreuzberg are the obvious Brixton-adjacent landing spots — canalside, multicultural, endlessly creative and still (relatively) affordable. Friedrichshain is nightlife and warehouse studios; Prenzlauer Berg is where you go leafier once life calms down.
If Berlin proper is getting pricey, Leipzig — "Hypezig" — is the affordable frontier a short train south, and a genuine option for anyone chasing space to make things.
The Anmeldung and the admin
Soon after you arrive you’ll register your address — the Anmeldung — and it unlocks nearly everything else, from a bank account to a phone contract. It’s a rite of passage more than a hurdle, but sort it promptly.
German bureaucracy rewards patience and paperwork. Bring documents, book appointments early, and don’t expect to wing it — it’s orderly, not impossible.
The Altbau stairs
Berlin’s beautiful old Altbau flats come with high ceilings, big rooms — and often no lift and a lot of stairs. That shapes a move more than anything, so tell your mover the floor and the lift situation up front.
It’s exactly the kind of access we scope before setting off, bringing the right crew rather than being caught out on the day. A sofa that won’t take the turn is a problem best solved in advance, not on the landing.
Moving the creative kit
Berlin is a scene move, and the scene comes with you — the records, the synths, the instruments, the works-in-progress. Pack them like they matter: proper sleeves and crates for vinyl, cases and padding for gear, real protection for anything you couldn’t replace.
Flag the irreplaceable up front so it’s handled accordingly. The rest is just furniture; the master tapes are not.
