Moving a home studio: records, instruments & gear
For a lot of Brixton, the biggest thing about a move isn’t the sofa — it’s the studio. The records, the synths, the instruments, the kit you’ve spent years building. Here’s how to move a creative life without the heartbreak.
Vinyl: the golden rules
Records travel upright, never flat — flat stacking is how you get warped vinyl and crushed sleeves. Pack them snugly in sturdy, purpose-sized boxes so they can’t shift, and keep the boxes small enough to actually lift, because a full crate of records is deceptively brutal.
Keep the collection out of the heat and out of the sun in transit. For a big or precious collection, tell your mover — it’s exactly the kind of load that earns careful, dedicated handling.
Synths, instruments and screens
Original flight cases and hard cases are worth their weight for a move — if you’ve still got them, use them. If not, proper padding, corner protection and secure boxing do the job. Detach anything that protrudes, and never let heavy items rest on delicate surfaces.
Guitars and stringed instruments travel best slightly slackened and cased; screens and monitors want their original boxes or serious padding, faces protected. Anything with a value or a memory attached should be on your "handle with care" list from the start.
What travels with you, not the van
Some things shouldn’t go in the load at all: master tapes, hard drives, the one-of-a-kind pieces, and anything you simply can’t afford to be without on day one. Keep them with you.
Back up your work before the move, too. Belt and braces — the drive that survives the journey is still safer with a copy in the cloud.
Tell your mover the truth
The best thing you can do is be upfront about what’s in the load. A wall of vinyl, a vintage synth, a finished body of work — these change how a move is packed and handled, and a good mover wants to know.
Give us the inventory and the worries early, and the precious stuff gets crated, padded and loaded accordingly. Surprises on moving day help no one.
